Primo Levi builds The Periodic Table as a sequence of element-named stories in which chemistry is not a metaphor pasted onto autobiography but the actual trade, discipline, and vocabulary through which a life becomes legible. Argon opens with inert gases and Piedmontese Jewish ancestry; Carbon closes with an atom passing from limestone into air, vine, wine, muscle, cedar, insect, milk, and finally the nerve cell guiding Levi's hand. Between those poles, elements become handles for family memory, student apprenticeship, Fascist exclusion, industrial labor, Auschwitz survival, postwar improvisation, and the ethics of remembering.

The early chapters move from inherited identity into chosen vocation. In Argon, Levi treats his Jewish-Piedmontese relatives as noble, inert, rare presences who live at the edge of Italian society and preserve a comic Hebrew-Piedmontese jargon. Hydrogen and Zinc show adolescent chemistry as trespass and initiation: Enrico's brother's laboratory, electrolysis, Professor P., Rita, zinc sulfate, and the racial magazine Defense of the Race make laboratory impurity and Jewish impurity converge. Iron then gives the book one of its strongest human portraits in Sandro Delmastro, whose mountain craft, rock climbing, and later Resistance death turn chemistry's contact with matter into a preparation for courage.

War tightens the connection between chemical certainty and political exposure. Potassium describes 1941 Turin, Jewish isolation, the Talmud Torah gym, Croce, physics, the Institute of Experimental Physics, Onsager, the heterodyne, and the accident in which potassium is mistaken for sodium. Nickel sends Levi to a mine after graduation with a degree stamped by the racial laws; Phosphorus sends him to a Milanese factory run by a paranoid Swiss-Milanese commendatore, where diabetes research, anthocyanins, phosphorus extracts, rabbits, Giulia Vineis, and Dr. Kerrn expose both the absurdity and the human warmth of wartime technical work.

The book does not remain in first-person memoir. Lead and Mercury are invented historical tales about prospecting and colonial isolation, but they still obey Levi's chemical imagination: Rodmund finds galena, smelts lead, sells the secret of pipes and coffin linings, and heads toward the sea; Corporal Abrahams discovers mercury on a remote island and turns alchemical greed, sexual jealousy, and Burton's wife-barter into a grotesque mineral economy. These chapters widen the book's range while keeping its practical attention to ore, weight, tools, furnaces, retorts, and trade.

The center of the book is marked by captivity. Gold narrates Levi's failed partisan formation, betrayal, arrest with Aldo and Guido, the Aosta barracks, Fossa, Cagni, the Dora gold washer, and the desire for a free manual skill at the edge of deportation. Cerium returns explicitly to Auschwitz: prisoner number 174517 steals iron-cerium rods from the laboratory, works with Alberto under the blankets to scrape lighter flints, and turns sparks into bread. Vanadium later reopens Auschwitz through a postwar varnish dispute with W., where a misspelled "naptenate" leads Levi back to Dr. Lothar Muller, IG-Farben, Buna-Monowitz, Dr. Pannwitz, Goldbaum, and the unresolved question of how a perpetrator asks for absolution.

The postwar industrial chapters restore comic energy without trivializing the trade. Chromium is a detective story about livered varnish, a lost "or" in "2 or 3" drops, chromate, basic lead oxide, and ammonium chloride. Sulfur inhabits Lanza's night shift as pressure rises in a kettle full of sulfodiene. Titanium is a child's view of white paint, Felice, and a chalk circle. Arsenic, Nitrogen, Tin, Uranium, and Silver range from a cobbler's poisoned sugar to lipstick dyes, alloxan from chicken or python excrement, stannous chloride in Emilio's apartment, Bonino's imaginary uranium, and Cerrato's X-ray paper spoiled by polyphenols from a tannery. Levi's recurring claim is practical and moral: matter resists fantasy, but it also rewards patience, observation, craft, and honest naming.

Hydrogen

Summary: In January, Enrico takes Levi after dinner to a laboratory that supposedly belongs to Enrico's brother, though the "keys" are really a euphemism for illicit access. The boys enter a dark, cold space, handle apparatus, produce hydrogen and oxygen by electrolysis, and experience the pleasure and danger of practical chemistry as a form of trespass. The chapter includes Enrico, the brother's lab, the stolen keys, water decomposition, hydrogen, oxygen, an explosion, the smell of gas, and the adolescent discovery that matter answers only exact operations. Zinc

Summary: The year is 1939, and outside the Chemical Institute Chamberlain has returned from Munich, Hitler has entered Prague, Franco has taken Barcelona and Madrid, Italy has occupied Albania, and the racial laws have made Levi a loner. Inside the Qualitative Analysis laboratory, Professor D. hands out powders, Autenrieth guides the students, ammonium chloride fogs the windows, and Sandro Delmastro announces "Habemus ferrum." Sandro, the son of a mason from Serra d'Ivrea, teaches Levi the mountains, Sbarüa, the Tooth of M., frozen shoes, hunger, wrong routes, iron in rock, and a discipline that later meets the Resistance and Salò violence in Cuneo. Potassium

Summary: In January 1941 Levi believes Germany likely to win and knows that a German Europe would be deadly for Jews, yet he and his friends in Turin practice self-imposed blindness. The chapter names Feuchtwanger's Oppermanns, a British White Book from Palestine, Madagascar, British Honduras, Talmud Torah, Einaudi, Ginzburg, Monti, Vittorio Foa, Carlo Levi, Croce, the Bible, geometry, physics, and the mountains around Turin as partial resources for inventing anti-Fascism. In the Institute of Experimental Physics, a shy astrophysics assistant gives Levi work on Onsager, polar molecules, the Westphal balance, a heterodyne filled with wartime Morse signals, and a purification mistake in which potassium explodes where sodium was expected. Analysis: January 1941 and Oppermanns establish the pressure under which Levi searches for certainty, while Talmud Torah and Croce show that moral education must be rebuilt from fragments. The mistake matters because it joins political danger to laboratory danger: names are only useful when they match the substance in front of you.

Nickel

Summary: Levi's summa cum laude diploma is marked “of the Jewish race,” leaving him jobless until a soldier-messenger recruits him in secret to recover nickel from an asbestos mine's waste. Incognito at the isolated plant, Levi maps nickel through repeated assays while Alida pads results and the mine's stories briefly shelter him from his father's illness and the tightening war. Ordinary separation methods fail because 0.2 percent nickel is bound inside serpentine. Levi then heats the mineral to 800 degrees, reduces it with hydrogen, and magnetically collects a fraction containing 6 percent nickel. The apparent breakthrough collapses: the interpretation is partly wrong, no industrial selector can process the fine powder, richer Albanian ore makes the scheme irrelevant, and any product would have fed Axis weapons. Analysis: The racial laws make Levi professionally disposable, while the asbestos mine values the same analytical training that Fascism has stigmatized. Serpentine and the 800-degree experiment give him a real intellectual victory: a hypothesis exposes material that routine assays could not isolate. Yet the magnetic selector, Albanian deposits, and likely military use separate discovery from usefulness and usefulness from moral value. The chapter therefore refuses a simple buried-treasure allegory. Chemistry restores Levi's agency and tests his claims against matter, but neither rigor nor ingenuity can by itself choose the political system that will exploit the result.

Lead

Summary: The first invented tale is narrated by Rodmund, a northern prospector from Thiuda whose family knows how to recognize, smelt, and sell lead. He travels south through passes, streams, shepherd settlements, larch valleys, Tringo, Sales, and eventually toward the sea, testing white speckled stones in a clay crucible with charcoal and a secret instrument. Rodmund finds galena, makes the shiny "little king," bargains with Borvio for gold, explains lead pipes, coffin linings, funeral statues, Saturn, and the metal of death, then carries his trade into mirror-making with a glazier and toward Icnusa, sailors, and new markets. Analysis: Rodmund and Thiuda detach the book from Levi's own century while preserving the chemist's habits of eye, hand, furnace, and bargain. Mercury

Summary: Corporal Daniel K. Abrahams narrates life with his wife Maggie on a remote island, where Burton, Willem, Gaetano, Andrea, and Hendrik disturb a long routine of pigs, garrison duty, and isolation. An earthquake opens a cave where metallic mercury drips from the rock, and Hendrik, the fugitive Dutch alchemist, invokes spiritus mundi, the philosophic Egg, sulfur, the female principle, and the beast with two backs while pulling Maggie toward him. Abrahams forces Hendrik to distill the mercury in retorts, prepares forty sealed pint jars, trades through Burton for four wives and two children, and ends by marrying Rebecca Johnson while redistributing Maggie and Hendrik. Analysis: Abrahams and Maggie make mercury a substance of jealousy before it becomes a commodity. Phosphorus

Summary: In June 1942 Levi leaves the mine after Dr. Martini summons him to the Hotel Suisse in Turin and offers work in a Milanese factory researching an oral cure for diabetes. The commendatore's laboratory contains Giulia Vineis, Signora Loredana, Paglietta, Varisco, Ambrogio, staggered tram schedules, locked glassware, Basel oversight, Dr. Kerrn's German treatise, anthocyanins from cornflowers, organic phosphorus from sage, celandine, parsley, rabbits, glycemia tests, and a bombing that releases the animals into copulation. Gold

Summary: Gold places Levi in Milan among Euge, Silvio, Ettore, Lina, Vanda, Ada, poetry, bombings, O'Neill, Thornton Wilder, Stalingrad, North Africa, March strikes in Turin, July 25, September 8, and the Nazi occupation. He joins an unprepared partisan band in Piedmont with Aldo and Guido, is betrayed on December 13, 1943, hides a tiny revolver in stove ashes, eats his false identity card, drops his notebook in the snow, and is imprisoned in Aosta under Fossa and the spy Cagni. In the boiler room he meets a contrabandist and gold washer who describes the Dora, a secret bend, a pan, moon phases, two or three grams a night, and a freedom Levi can envy from his cell. Analysis: December 13 1943, Aldo, and Guido convert the political awakening of Milan into capture and helplessness. Cerium

Summary: In November 1944 Levi is prisoner 174517 in the Auschwitz chemical laboratory, close to death yet able to steal and reason because hunger has become the dominant fact of the body. He tries fatty acids, sanitary cotton, glycerin, and other failed loot before finding unlabeled gray rods of iron-cerium used for oxyacetylene torch ignition. Alberto recognizes their value for clandestine cigarette lighters, and during an air-raid alarm Levi steals the rest; together they scrape the rods under blankets at night, using a metal plate with a round hole to make flints worth bread, while the Russians approach, Buna shakes under bombing, and Alberto later disappears on the evacuation march to Buchenwald and Mauthausen. The investigation leads through purchase specifications, checking specifications, chromate file cards, the January 4, 1944 revision, the February 22 livered batch, a mistaken "23" where "2 or 3" drops had once stood, basic chromate, free lead oxide, ball mills, ammonium chloride, ammonia puffs, and two bicycle tires awarded after success. Summary: Dedicated to Felice Fantino, this miniature is seen through Maria, a child watching a tall painter with a newspaper boat on his head, a pipe, a small can, and white paint that turns the kitchen closet, cupboard, chairs, and table dazzlingly clean. Maria asks why the paint is so white and hears "titanium" as something like a threat to cut her, then learns the man's name is Felice and tries not to touch the irresistible surface. Felice draws a chalk circle around Maria, tells her to stay there, leaves her in the magical boundary, and finally wipes the circle away so the enchantment is broken and she can leave happy. Levi detects turbidity, burns a gram in a platinum crucible, smells a metallic garlicky odor, uses hydrogen sulfide from the Kipp apparatus, and identifies yellow arsenious sulfide, the arsenic of Mithridates and Madame Bovary. The cobbler from Via Gioberti and Via Pastrengo explains that a younger rival spread lies about cardboard soles, drunkenness, insurance murder, and tetanus, then sent poisoned sugar; he will return it through a little old lady or in person, not prosecute, because there is room in the trade for everyone. Summary: A cosmetics manufacturer with Clark Gable mustache, pomade, hair tufts, and a dirty shed of made-up girls asks Levi to solve a lipstick problem. Levi observes rouge, "anelline," "adelaide," enameled pots, scarlet cylinders, kiss-proof tests, filter paper, an 80 degree stove, benzene, centrifugation, soluble dye, insoluble pigment, and then receives a request for alloxan as a permanent mucous-membrane dye. The search for alloxan sends him to the University of Turin library, Zentralblatt, Beilstein, uric acid, chicken excrement, python excrement, pollina, Corso Francia, his new wife, and a failed oxidation that leaves only foul vapors, blocked filters, and no crystals.
